This study was designed to.determine the burden o. HEV infectio. amo.g HIV po.itive individuals in Nigeria and the effect o. HIV treatment o. the burden o. HEV infectio. amo.g this gro.p o. patients. Metho.s: Aliquo. o. plasma samples co.lected fo. labo.ato.y investigatio.s such as CD4 enumeratio., blo.d chemistry (AST, ALT, Creatine, Urea) were used to.determine the presence o. HEV IgG and IgM antibo.ies using co.mercially available ELISA. Samples analysed in the study were co.lected fro. 180 HIV po.itive individuals (90 ART naive and 90 ART experienced) attending the ART clinic at the University Co.lege Ho.pital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Results: Twenty two.o. the 180 (12.2%) samples were po.itive fo. either HEV IgG (20/180) o. IgM (2/180). The rate o. HEV IgG was higher amo.g ART naive individuals and the two.IgM po.itive perso.s were ART naive. There was no.significant difference in the mean CD4 co.nt and mean ALT between HEV sero.egative and sero.o.itive individuals (P = 0.8 and 0.2 respectively). Co.clusio.s: The results o. this study suggest the need to.test fo. HEV infectio. in HIV po.itive individuals fo. the early diagno.is and pro.er management since HEV is kno.n to.be fulminant in the presence o. underlying liver disease that is co.mo. amo.g HIV infected perso.s.
