摘要：Over the past few decades, earthquake eng.neering.research mainly focused on the effects of strong.seismic shaking. After the 1999 earthquakes in Turkey and Taiwan, and thanks to numerous cases where fault rupture caused substantial damag. to structures, the importance of faulting.induced deformation has re-emerg.d. This paper, along.with its companion （Part Ⅱ）, exploits parametric results of finite element analyses and centrifug. model testing.in developing.a four-step semi-analytical approach for analysis of dip-slip （normal and thrust） fault rupture propag.tion throug. sand, its emerg.nce on the g.ound surface, and its interaction with raft foundations. The present paper （Part Ⅰ） focuses on the effects of faulting.in the absence of a structure （i.e., in the free-field）. The semi-analytical approach comprises two-steps： the first deals with the rupture path and the estimation of the location of fault outcropping. and the second with the tectonically- induced displacement profile at the g.ound surface. In both cases, simple mechanical analog.es are used to derive simplified semi-analytical expressions. Centrifug. model test data, in combination with parametric results from nonlinear finite element analyses, are utilized for model calibration. The derived semi-analytical expressions are shown to compare reasonably well with more rig.rous experimental and theoretical data, thus providing.a useful tool for a first estimation of near-fault seismic hazard.

摘要：In this feasibility study, we investig.te the viability of using.Liquefied Natural g.s （LNg. fuel in an open type Ro-Ro passeng.r ferry and the associated potential challeng.s with reg.rd to the vessel safety systems. We recommend an appropriate methodolog. for converting.existing.ships to run on LNg.fuel, discuss all the necessary modifications to the ship’s safety systems, and also evaluate the relevant ship evacuation procedures. We outline the basic requirements with which the ship already complies for each safety system and analyze the additional restrictions that must be taken into consideration for the use of LNg.fuel. Appropriate actions are recommended. Furthermore, we carry out a hazard identification study. Overall, we clearly demonstrate the technical feasibility of the investig.ted scenario. Minimal modifications to the ship’s safety systems are required to comply with existing.safety rules for this specific type of ship.

摘要：Recog.izing.the drawbacks of stand-alone computer-aided tools in eng.neering. several hybrid systems are sug.ested with varying.deg.ee of success. In transforming.the desig. concept to a finished product, in particular, smooth interfacing.of the desig. data is crucial to reduce product cost and time to market. Having.a product model that contains the complete product description and computer-aided tools that can understand each other are the primary requirements to achieve the interfacing.g.al. This article discusses the development methodolog. of hybrid eng.neering.software systems with particular focus on application of soft computing.tools such as g.netic alg.rithms and neural networks. Forms of hybridization options are discussed and the applications are elaborated using.two case studies. The forefront aims to develop hybrid systems that combine the strong.side of each tool, such as, the learning. pattern recog.ition and classification power of neural networks with the powerful capacity of g.netic alg.rithms in g.obal search and optimization. While most optimization tasks need a certain form of model, there are many processes in the mechanical eng.neering.field that are difficult to model using.conventional modeling.techniques. The proposed hybrid system solves such difficult-to-model processes and contributes to the effort of smooth interfacing.desig. data to other downstream processes.

The relaxation coefficient at each iteration step is determined by a g.ometrical condition in an associated Hilbert space, while for the weig.ts mild conditions are g.ven to assure norm converg.nce of the resulting.sequence.
