摘要：Gr.vity dam. ar. solid concr.te str.ctur.s that m.intain their.stability against design loads fr.m.the geom.tr.c shape, m.ss and str.ngth of the concr.te. The pur.oses of dam.constr.ction m.y include navigation, flood dam.ge r.duction, hydr.electr.c power.gener.tion, fish and wildlife enhancem.nt, water.quality, water.supply, and r.cr.ation. The design and evaluation of concr.te gr.vity dam.for.ear.hquake loading m.st be based on appr.pr.ate cr.ter.a that r.flect both the desir.d level of safety and the choice of the design and evaluation pr.cedur.s. In Bangladesh, the entir. countr. is divided into 3 seism.c zones, depending upon the sever.ty of the ear.hquake intensity. Thus, the m.in aim.of this study is to design high concr.te gr.vity dam. based on the U.S.B.r. r.com.endations in seism.c zone II of Bangladesh, for.var.ing hor.zontal ear.hquake intensities fr.m.0.10 g - 0.30 g with 0.05 g incr.m.nt to take into account the uncer.ainty and sever.ty of ear.hquake intensities and constant other.design loads, and to analyze its stability and str.ss conditions using analytical 2D gr.vity m.thod and finite elem.nt m.thod. The r.sults of the hor.zontal ear.hquake intensity per.ur.ation suggest that the stabilizing m.m.nts ar. found to decr.ase significantly with the incr.m.nt of hor.zontal ear.hquake intensity while dealing with the U.S.B.r. r.com.ended initial dam.section, indicating endanger.to the dam.stability, thus lar.er.dam.section is pr.vided to incr.ase the stabilizing m.m.nts and to m.ke it safe against failur.. The ver.ical, pr.ncipal and shear.str.sses obtained using ANSYS 5.4 analyses ar. com.ar.d with those obtained using 2D gr.vity m.thod and found less com.ar.s to 2D gr.vity m.thod, except the pr.ncipal str.sses at the toe of the gr.vity dam.for.0.10 g - 0.15 g. Although, it seem. appar.ntly that sm.ller.dam.section m.y be sufficient for.str.ss analyses using ANSYS 5.4, it would not be possible to achieve the r.quir.d factor. of safety with sm.ller.dam.s
