摘要：“Naming of Parts”and“plato told”are two poems written respectively by Henry Reed and *** during the Second World war.“Naming of Parts”depicts the opposition and assimilation of two voices in the poem while“plato told”features the contrast between the silenced voices and an accentuated voice in the *** two poems suggest that submitting oneself to the speech pattern typical of military personnel leads to the loss of one’s voice,individuality,and ultimately one’s ***,these two poems reveal the connection between a person’s voice and individuality in a war and demonstrate a clear antiwar attitude.

摘要：This paper proposes new ways to understand the sense of universality in music through a reflection and analysis of George Crumb＇s Black Angels （Images 1）： Thirteen lmages from the Dark Land, one of the defining musical expressions of the Vietnam war era. It centers on an analysis of the relationship of the body/self to an ＂ecology of war＂ produced through Crumb＇s music that renders these selves indistinct within this musical geography. The selves that inhabit Black Angels could be that of anybody in particular since Crumb seeks to invoke in his music the primeval experience of terror that inhabits in all of us as the inheritors of mankind＇s violence. This sense of the universal militates against the desirable qualities of popular music that rely on the production of autonomous and singular selves that make the distinction between enemy and friend possible and distinct. We focus on Crumb＇s use of archaisms, his construction of time in this piece, and the author＇s overall purpose to invoke a time of war rather than to reflect the conditions of war, in order to delineate the contours of the universal time and space producing the undifferentiated primeval self of war. We conclude that although Crumb＇s rejection of the national self deprives the piece of a salient place in the popular cannon of the war, it has left an intellectual legacy on the times of the Vietnam war that deserves to be preserved.

摘要：As a study in art history critical theory, this paper looks at the appreciation and usage of art amongst interest groups at the time of the Great war and the subsequent legacy of the work of Canada＇s resident war artist Richard Jack. The Canadian war Museum＇s recent web page described Jack＇s standing officer in The Second Battle of Ypres 22 April to 25 May 1915 as one who ＂exemplifies the courage and resolve of the inexperienced Canadians in their first major battle＂. This comment showed a marked contrast to the contemporary art critic Richard Cork who described the first of the Canadian war memorials paintings as ＂a clich6-ridden bandaged officer ... shamelessly catering to public sentiment＂. Given these disparate positions, the author attempts to explain the gulf between these points of view and subsequently make the case that art has a broad application that might make us cautious of viewing a given work without due consideration of the context of its making and future merits.
