摘要：Advertisement （ad） selection plays an important role in sponsored search, since it is an upstream component and will heavily influence the effectiveness of the subsequent auction mechanism. However, most existing ad selection methods regard ad selection as a relatively independent module, and only consider the literal or semantic matching between queries and keywords during the ad selection process. In this paper, we argue that this approach is not globally optimal. Our proposal is to formulate ad selection as such an optimization problem that the selected ads can work together with downstream components （e.g., the auction mechanism） to achieve the maximization of user clicks, advertiser social welfare, and search engine revenue （we call the combination of these objective functions as the marketplace objective for ease of reference）. To this end, we 1） extract a bunch of features to represent each pair of query and keyword, and 2） train a machine learning model that maps the features to a binary variable indicating whether the keyword is selected or not, by maximizing the aforementioned marketplace objective. This formalization seems quite natural; however, it is technically difficult because the marketplace objective is non-convex, discontinuous, and indifferentiable regarding the model parameter due to the ranking and second-price rules in the auction mechanism. To tackle the challenge, we propose a probabilistic approximation of the marketplace objective, which is smooth and can be effectively optimized by conventional optimization techniques. We test the ad selection model learned with our proposed method using the sponsored search log from a commercial search engine. The experimental results show that our method can significantly outperform several ad selection algorithms on all the metrics under investigation.

摘要：This paper discusses the analysis and design of a very thin slotless permanent magnet (PM) brushless motor whose stator laminations are manufactured from a single strip of steel that is edge wound into a spiral (like a "Slinky") and then fitted over the windings that are preformed on the outside surface of a non-conducting former. Analytical and finite element analysis (FEA) are used to determine the constrained optimum dimensions of a motor used to drive a rim driven thruster in which the motor rotor is fitted onto the rim of the propeller and the stator is encapsulated in the thin Kort nozzle of the thruster. The paper describes the fabrication of a demonstrator motor and presents experimental results to validate the theoretical calculations. Experimental motor performance results are also reported and compared with those of a slotted motor that fits within the same active radial dimensions as the slotless motor. The slotless motor, which has longer active length and endwindings, and thicker magnets than the slotted motor, was found to be less efficient and more expensive (prototype cost) than the slotted machine. © by High Technology Letters Press.

摘要：An application of the current search (CS), one of the most efficient metaheuristic optimization search techniques, to design the PIDA (proportional-integral-derivative-accelerated) controllers is proposed in this paper. The CS is applied to search for the optimum PIDA controller’s parameters. The obtained controllers are tested against nine benchmark systems collected by ?sstr?m and H?gglund considered as the hard-to-be-controlled plants and an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. As results, the optimum PIDA controllers can be successfully obtained by the CS and the responses of controlled systems are very satisfactory.

摘要：This paper proposes the current search (CS) metaheuristics conceptualized from the electric current flowing through electric networks for optimization problems with continuous design variables. The CS algorithm possesses two powerful strategies, exploration and exploitation, for searching the global optimum. Based on the stochastic process, the derivatives of the objective function is unnecessary for the proposed CS. To evaluate its performance, the CS is tested against several unconstrained optimization problems. The results obtained are compared to those obtained by the popular search techniques, i.e., the genetic algorithm (GA), the particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the adaptive tabu search (ATS). As results, the CS outperforms other algorithms and provides superior results. The CS is also applied to a constrained design of the optimum PID controller for the dc motor speed control system. From experimental results, the CS has been successfully applied to the speed control of the dc motor.
